The Legend Lives On: The Dave Schultz Wrestling Club

Wrestling has always been a sport built on resilience. Few stories embody that spirit more than the creation of the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club. A program born from tragedy that became one of the most influential forces in American wrestling.

In 1996, the wrestling world lost one of its most respected champions upon the passing of Olympic Gold Medalist and World Champion, Dave Schultz. Schultz was more than a world-class competitor. He was a teacher of the sport, a technical innovator, and a beloved member of the wrestling community whose impact reached far beyond the mat.

In the months that followed, the community rallied around his family and the athletes he had coached. Out of that moment came the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club, founded by his wife, Nancy Schultz, to support wrestlers who had trained alongside him and suddenly found themselves without a program or resources as the Olympic year approached.

The original mission was simple: help athletes continue pursuing their Olympic dreams. What began as a short-term effort quickly grew into something much larger. With the support of donors, coaches, and the broader wrestling community, the DSWC became a national training organization supporting athletes in freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s wrestling. More than just a club, it became a gathering place for elite competitors and a support system for wrestlers chasing world and Olympic success. The program helped provide athletes with coaching, training opportunities, equipment, and financial support.

After nearly a decade of success, the national program of the DSWC concluded following the 2005 international season. By that time, the landscape of American wrestling had expanded, with more training opportunities and programs available to elite athletes across the country.

Even after the conclusion of the program, its legacy continued to shape the sport. Athletes who trained under its banner, including Olympians Cary Kolat and Brandon Slay, carried its influence into coaching, international competition, and the next generation of wrestling development.

The DSWC stands as a powerful reminder of what the wrestling community can build together. What began as an effort to support athletes in a difficult moment evolved into a program that helped produce Olympic champions and world-class competitors. More importantly, it preserved the spirit of a wrestler who believed deeply in sharing knowledge, lifting up teammates, and pushing the sport forward.

That legacy continues to inspire athletes today, on the mat, in the training room, and everywhere wrestling lives.
